As part of our guide to the best hotel club and executive lounges in London, I am writing a review of the renovated, (in late 2014), and extended executive lounge at the Grosvenor House, a JW Marriott hotel, on Park Lane, right in the center of London.
Location
A long corridor joined this living area to the bedroom, bathroom, and front door. The living area looked west over Hyde Park and Park Lane, whereas the bedroom looked north over a side street. The bathroom also faced North and offered a large shower (no bath), basin with vanity area, and toilet. Toiletries were lemon-scented Penhaligon’s Quercus and were plentiful in large bottles.

JW Steakhouse, located in a wood-panelled, double-height dining room overlooking the park – where breakfast is also served – holds its own in a city with a lot of great steak restaurants. It offers well-executed classic steakhouse starters such as shrimp and avocado cocktail and baked Scottish king scallops. An impressive steak menu follows, divided into the highest grade of American prime beef and British butchers' cuts, which includes the 32oz JW tomahawk rib eye. The signature cheesecake is the most talked-about dessert, with good reason – it’s ridiculously creamy and delicious.

Our aim is to travel the world and review all travel opportunities to help other families. From the ground floor foyer, you can access this Executive Club Lounge using your room key, where you are welcomed by a media wall, playing videos throughout the day, which are all shot in Hyde Park. The wood and cream décor is warm and welcoming with ample seating. Although now not used as such, the Great Room was originally built as an ice-rink, and much of the machinery lies dormant under the current flooring.
Although there are no windows in this lounge, the interior design is such that I didn’t really notice the lack of natural light. One unusual thing about the lounge is the slight rumble of tube trains passing below from time to time, serving to remind guests that they’re in the heart of London. We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay in our Park View Suite at the JW Grosvenor House. It felt homely, more like an apartment than a hotel room, partially due to its size but also to the light provided by the suite’s large windows and the comparatively quietness of the bedroom.

I went for the voucher, and was also informed I had access to the Executive Lounge for breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening canapés (more on those later). Park Lane may be a busy location, but you can’t beat its centrality. The hotel is positioned immediately opposite the green expanses of Hyde Park, a stone’s throw from Piccadilly and Oxford Street and a short stroll across the corner of the park to Knightsbridge. The hotel’s sound-proofing is excellent so once you’re in, you don’t hear a whistle from the road. You can walk into the hotel on Park Lane but the main, grand, drive-in entrance is tucked around the back on Park Street, overlooking restaurant- and boutique-filled Mayfair. Marble Arch (Central Line), a five-minute stroll north, is the nearest Tube station, while Hyde Park Corner (Piccadilly Line) is a 10-minute stroll south.

Sonja Henie, Cecilia Colledge, and other famous skaters frequently displayed their skill. Unfortunately, the room was much more dated than what the hotel’s prices should have demanded. Service was also lacking, as trying to reach the front desk was often a frustrating experience.
Great location, large comfortable rooms with every comfort included, goos food and friendly professional staff. In 1840, The 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have introduced the tradition of taking Afternoon Tea when she requested a selection of light snacks to be served alongside tea to help ward off her mid-afternoon hunger. Overall, the lounge was the best part of the hotel, and definitely made me feel like the hotel was able to execute with some of its better strengths.
I was offered a fruit basket or bottle of wine, and was only begrudgingly offered 10,000 Bonvoy points at my suggestion when I noted my stay was ending soon. Sadly, my time spent in hotels in the United Kingdom was one wherein the hard product consistently outperformed the soft, and I don’t feel that this property merits the premium it demands in either cash or points given its lack of polish.
